- Responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined.
- You can execute a prerecorded list of instructions (a program).
Modern computers are electronic and digital. The actual machinery, wires, transistors, and circuits, called hardware; The instructions and data are called software.
All general-purpose computers require the following components hardware:
- Memory: Allows you to store computer data and programs, at least temporarily.
- Mass Storage Device (mass storage device): Allows the computer retains large amounts of data permanently. Hard drives are an example of mass storage device.
- Input devices (input devices): Generally keyboard and mouse input device is the conduit through which data and instructions are fed into a computer.
- Output devices (output devices): The display screen, printer, or any other device that lets you see the result of what has made the computer.
- The central processing unit (CPU): The brain of the computer, is the component that actually executes instructions.
In addition to these components, many others make it possible for the basic components work together efficiently. For example, each computer requires a bus to transmit data from one computer to another party.
Generally computers can be sorted by size and power as follows, although there is considerable overlap:
- Personal computer (personal computer): A small computer for one user based on a microprocessor. In addition to the microprocessor, a personal computer has a keyboard for entering data, a monitor to display the information, and a storage device to store data.
- Workstation (workstation): A high-powered computer for one user. A workstation is like a personal computer, but has a more powerful microprocessor and a better quality monitor.
- Minicomputer (Minicomputer): A multi-user computer capable of supporting hundreds of users simultaneously.
